Scope

The census figures relate to the de facto population, i.e. the figures include visitors present on census night as well as those in residence, while usual residents temporarily absent from the area are excluded from the census count. Frequency

    The 34 administrative counties.

    Towns of 1,500 population and over listed, distinguishing between legally defined boundaries and suburbs or environs. All towns listed including "census towns" (cluster of 50 or more occupied dwellings, not having a legally defined boundary), in which within a distance of 800 metres there is a nucleus of either 30 occupied houses on both sides of the road or 20 occupied houses on one side of the road.
  • Constituency
    The 43 constituencies.
  • Electoral Divisions
    The 3,440 Electoral Divisions.
  • Local Electoral Areas
    As defined in the relevant Orders made under the Local Government Act, 1994.
  • Gaeltacht
    As defined by the Gaeltacht Areas Orders.
  • Islands
    All inhabited Islands off the coast.
